Weekly Trends: Metallica Light Up the Sphere, Butcher Babies Bloom at Night, Amon Amarth Wake the Allfather

By J. Tanner Garcia · October 2026

Big-tent week. Metallica moved into a glowing ball in the desert, Butcher Babies came back with one voice and a lot of fight, and the Vikings rowed back into port.

Metallica open the Sphere: Life Burns Faster Turns Vegas Into a Pit

Metallica opened their Life Burns Faster residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas on October 1, and the second night on October 3 gave the diehards something to scream about. Devil's Dance came back for the first time since 2008, and The Outlaw Torn returned for the first time since 2019. Opening night kicked off with Battery and closed with Master of Puppets, which is about as Metallica as it gets. It's 24 shows through March 13, run like the M72 tour, with two nights and two completely different setlists. Lars says watching U2 open the place in 2023 is what got them thinking. Look, I haven't been inside that ball, and I'm not going to pretend I know how it feels. But a thrash band from the garage days headlining a giant glowing orb for 24 nights? That's a long way from the garage.

Butcher Babies drop Nightbloom: Heidi Shepherd Turns Survival Into a Record

Butcher Babies released Nightbloom on October 2 through Judge & Jury Records, their first album since Carla Harvey left in 2024. That leaves Heidi Shepherd out front, and she is not flinching. Howard Benson produced it, the same guy who has made hard rock radio sound huge for decades. Heidi says the album isn't about the suffering, it's about the survival. That's a woman who has been grinding on stages for years and refuses to fold. Flowers for that.

Amon Amarth wake the Allfather: The Allfather Awakens Sails Into Port

Amon Amarth dropped The Allfather Awakens on October 2 through Metal Blade. Ten tracks, produced by Jacob Hansen in Denmark. They're touring North America with Dethklok and Castle Rat, with a new stage show built around Odin's golden hall. Raise a horn.
